June Amateur Draft
Here’s a team that of late has had an idea of exactly what they wanted to do. When you look at their success in the first few rounds of the draft, you have some excellent players (Pedroia, Youkilis, Lester, Ellsbury, Buchholz) who are clearly having a major impact on the continued success that the Red Sox are having. There aren’t as many late round values that have made it, but that’s to be expected for the most part. There’s a fair amount of players who have been moved for key pieces as well, with Justin Masterson and Carl Pavano being the most valuable (Victor Martinez and Pedro Martinez, respectively). Overall, they’ve done well with their top picks, and almost to a fault have been slow to bring up their top prospects.
International Free Agency
They have had some very solid signings over the years. Daisuke Matsuzaka hasn’t quite turned out the way that they had hoped, but it could always be worse – they could have gotten Kei Igawa. Hanley Ramirez is far and away the best player that they signed from the international market, and was used to acquire both Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, two critical pieces in their 2007 World Championship. The relievers that made the list (Francisco and Betancourt specifically) had no appearances with the Red Sox, but both did not show success until much later on after leaving the organization.
Overall Grade
B+. This group of players has really had a lot of success in the Majors, with an MVP from Dustin Pedroia, and a lot of hope for both now and the future in Clay Buchholz, Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester, and Kevin Youkilis already establishing themselves. This team also has players coming as well, with Ryan Kalish, Casey Kelly, and Ryan Westmoreland all leading the list of top prospects on the way for the Sox. Overall, the only real weakness I see is the bench, but the pitchers I included I felt were more productive than some of the position players I could have included instead.
