Netflix was finally able to get the original 9-part documentary by Ken Burns about the great game, and despite being a huge fan I have never actually seen it. There are so many little factoids that are brought up as a part of it that despite my high level of knowledge regarding the history of the game, still surprised me to find out.

The Dodgers were originally known as the “Trolley Dodgers”, hence where the Dodgers moniker came from.

“It is a haunted game in which all players are measured against the ghosts of all who have gone before.”

The game of baseball was believed “too violent” for women to play.

The first conspiracy to throw games was in only the 2nd season of the National League with Jim Devlin and 3 others being paid to throw games in the 1877 pennant race. Devlin and the others were banned from baseball permanently.

Louisville Slugger was formed essentially out of luck – Pete Browning asked Hillerich to make a new bat for him after his previous bat broke. Browning then went 3 for 3 that day.

It’s amazing how many of the players in the early years of the league would find any way that they could to get little advantages via loopholes in the rules.

Players attempted to fight the reserve clause as far back as the late 1890s, with little or no success at all.

Daniel Okrent made a pair of appearances in the episode as well, discussing some of the historical anecdotes. Besides being an editor and also a historian, Okrent is known for helping to invent rotisserie baseball.

I’m really looking forward to watching the rest of the documentary, as Inning 1 only got us to the turn of the century.

With less than a week until opening day, here’s my predictions for the playoffs and the major awards as well. I already gave my division winners in each division preview post, but here’s a recap:

NL: San Francisco, Milwaukee, Philadelphia
AL: Texas, Minnesota, Boston

My two wild card predictions are Atlanta and Tampa Bay. As a result, here’s my playoff matchups:

Atlanta vs. San Francisco
Milwaukee vs. Philadelphia
Tampa Bay vs. Minnesota
Texas vs. Boston

I think that San Francisco and Philadelphia will both just have too much pitching not to advance in these matchups, and will face each other in the NL Championship. On the other side, I think that Tampa and Boston will be the top two teams overall in the league, and will advance to the AL Championship

Tampa Bay vs. Boston
San Francisco vs. Philadelphia

In the AL Championship, I think that the Boston lineup will be just too much for Tampa, despite potential flaws in the Boston pitching staff. In the National League, the addition of a 4th ace by the Phillies may be too much for the Giants, but it will definitely be a series that is built around pitching.

Boston vs. Philadelphia

In what appears likely to be the top offensive team facing off against one of the best pitching staffs in recent memory, I think that Philadelphia would likely defeat Boston. Off the top of my head guess makes me think it will take 6 games.

Awards Predictions

Here’s my picks for the major awards:

AL Rookie of the Year: Jeremy Hellickson
NL Rookie of the Year: Brandon Belt
AL Cy Young Award: Jon Lester
NL Cy Young Award: Roy Halladay
AL Most Valuable Player: Evan Longoria
NL Most Valuable Player: Ryan Braun
AL Manager of the Year: Joe Maddon
NL Manager of the Year: Ron Roenicke

My Thoughts

Arizona – Under the leadership of new GM Kevin Towers, the Diamondbacks have already begun the process of rebuilding by trading away Mark Reynolds and letting Adam LaRoche and Brandon Webb leave via free agency. They seem extremely unlikely to compete this season, but will look for improvements from Justin Upton and Stephen Drew.

Colorado – The Rockies spent their offseason spending money on contract extensions, as both Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki were signed to long term contract extensions. The team also did well to re-sign some of their free agents, most notably Jorge de la Rosa. This really seems like a team to me that has the chance to compete for the division title, providing they get a few breaks to go their way. They will look for a repeat performance from Ubaldo Jimenez and improvements from Jhoulys Chacin and Dexter Fowler as well.

Los Angeles – With the ownership situation in a state of partial disarray, the Dodgers didn’t really go out and spend a lot of money this offseason. They did resign free agent starter Ted Lilly, but otherwise did not make any large acquisitions. The pitching staff is excellent, but they will look for a bounce back season from Jonathan Broxton as the closer. The Dodgers are another team that seems to me like they can compete, providing they catch a few breaks.

San Diego – The biggest news out of the Padres this offseason unfortunately was the trade of star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. They have cut payroll down to a very minimal amount at this point, and could look to move closer Heath Bell if they fall out of contention. I am not seeing a repeat of last year’s 90 win performance out of this group of players, but I don’t think they are necessarily going to be terrible either. They will look for Mat Latos to build on his excellent 2010 season and try to take another step forward, but there’s a lot of questions after him in the rotation.

San Francisco – The reigning World Champions only had one slightly major acquisition (Tejada), but did well to resign Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff. Their pitching could conceivably be better than last year, with Madison Bumgarner making a full season of starts this year. 2010 NL Rookie of the Year Buster Posey will be up for the full season this year, and top prospect Brandon Belt is not likely to be in AAA for very long either. This is a team that could compete for the NL crown again.

Overall Thoughts

The NL West has the Giants at the top, and then a lot of question marks behind them. I honestly think that any of the teams at 2 through 4 could finish in any order in those spots. Here’s my predicted order of finish:

1. San Francisco
2. Colorado
3. Los Angeles
4. San Diego
5. Arizona

St. Louis – Brendan Ryan, Pedro Feliz, Brad Penny, Jeff Suppan

My Thoughts

Chicago – The Cubs had a very disappointing season last year, and went out and tried to plug some of those holes this offseason. Bringing in Carlos Pena on a 1 year contract, despite its cost, looks like a very nice signing for a power bat. The acquisition of Matt Garza brings a young, cost-controlled high-end starting pitcher to their rotation, but at the cost of top prospects Hak-Ju Lee, Chris Archer, and others. I am not sold that this team will compete this year, as they will need bounceback performances from Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez, and Carlos Zambrano to really end up in the thick of the race.

Cincinnati – The defending NL Central champions, the team has lost Aaron Harang and will hope that the combination of Mike Leake, Travis Wood, and others will be able to pitch complete seasons this year. The team returns nearly every player from last season’s title, but I don’t think that it is a slam-dunk that they will just run away with the division again this year.

Houston – Talk about a rebuilding effort. Here’s a team which has very few high-end prospects in the system right now, who also does not have a lot of higher-quality players at the Major League level either. There are some quality players in Hunter Pence and Brett Myers, but there’s not a lot of hope for the 2011 season. They will look to get a solid rookie season out of last year’s acquisition, Brett Wallace, but you have essentially gathered a group of mid-level players who can fill out a roster, but are unlikely to compete as a group for a division title, let alone a league championship

Milwaukee – And within the same division, you have a team who has gone all-in for 2011. The Brewers have traded nearly all of their top prospects in order to improve their pitching staff, and did so with the acquisitions of Marcum and Greinke. It’s not a great sign that Greinke is hurt already, but he should return in mid April and only miss a few starts. The bigger story throughout the season will be whether or not they fall out of contention and attempt to trade Prince Fielder before the deadline. They definitely remain a team to be reckoned with in the NL Central.

Pittsburgh – For a team that lost 105 games last year, they actually have a lot to look forward to. Center fielder Andrew McCutchen is poised to become one of the best young players in the Majors, and 2nd year players Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez both will look to build on their solid rookie years. They aren’t likely to compete this season, but there’s hope for Pirates fans that is starting to show itself at the Major League level.

St. Louis – The biggest story out of St. Louis up until the start of Spring Training was whether or not Albert Pujols would sign a contract extension prior to the start of the season, and unfortunately it’s no longer the current top story out of their camp. With Cy Young runner up Adam Wainwright out for the season with Tommy John surgery, they will now look to replace at least some part of his production in the starting rotation. I’m not sold that this team, as constructed, can compete for the division title. They will need everything else to fall just right for them to win this division.

Overall Thoughts

The NL Central really has the look of a wide open division. If things fall just right, 4 of the teams could conceivably win the division this season. That said, I’m not sold that things will fall right for all of them, but it should be intersting to watch regardless. Here’s my predicted order of finish:

1. Milwaukee
2. Cincinnati
3. St. Louis
4. Chicago
5. Pittsburgh
6. Houston

My Thoughts

Atlanta – This is a playoff team from last year that has upgraded itself at 2B (Uggla), and will look for growth from Jason Heyward in his second season. The team will plug in Freddie Freeman to start at 1B, and hope that he can have even a partially similar season to Heyward’s rookie year. The pitching remains solid, behind Tommy Hanson, Tim Hudson, and Jair Jurrjens. The biggest role that seems to be up in the air coming into Spring Training is the closer, with Craig Kimbrel and Jonny Venters competing for the job.

Florida – As they prepare to move into their new stadium in 2012, this is a young team who should continue to be exciting for the next few seasons. It appears that 3B Matt Dominguez is likely to be the starter this year, despite not playing a single day in the Majors yet. However, the loss of Dan Uggla‘s bat in their lineup could cause a major hole in terms of power and run production. They’re also hoping that Javier Vazquez will rebound with a return to the NL East, and also provide some more veteran leadership with Josh Johnson in the starting rotation. I’m not sold that they stand a great chance of winning the division, but they could surprise some people in a tough division.

New York – With new GM Sandy Alderson on board, 2011 is going to be a partial rebuilding season. They did not make any substantial changes to their roster, and will look to get bounceback seasons from players like Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes instead. Ace Johan Santana is expected to be out until midseason, and the team is going to be looking for nice performances from Chris Young and Chris Capuano.

Philadelphia – The Phillies went out and made what was probably the biggest surprise move of the offseason, inking Cliff Lee to a 5 year, $120 million contract. With their four aces in the starting rotation, they definitely look like the team to beat in the NL East. However, the injuries are already starting to pile up, as Chase Utley has yet to play in Spring Training, and potential right fielder Domonic Brown will miss 3-6 weeks after having hand surgery. If this team can stay healthy, I don’t think there’s a team in the NL that can compete with them. But that is a gigantic if.

Washington – The Nationals made one of the biggest splashes in the free agent market, and it was completely unexpected. Jayson Werth signed a 7 year contract with the team, and will play right field for the first few years of the contract. The team is still not ready to compete, but they will look for continued growth from Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa. Jordan Zimmermann will also look to have an injury free campaign, and while they will miss Stephen Strasburg this season, he should be back in 2012 from his injuries.

Overall Thoughts

The NL East really comes down to the two teams at the top of the pile. The Braves and Phillies really seem like they will be the only teams that are likely to win the division or the Wild Card. The Mets and Nationals just simply aren’t ready, and I don’t believe that the Marlins are ready to compete quite yet either. Here’s my predicted order of finish:

1. Philadelphia
2. Atlanta
3. Florida
4. Washington
5. New York

My Thoughts

Los Angeles – When I first look at the moves that the Angels made, I really like what they did in terms of how it affects my own favorite team, the A’s. This is a team that really does not look like it has improved overall, and managed to spend quite a bit of money doing it. They looked to be one of the main suitors for Carl Crawford, and failed to sign him. Adrian Beltre would have been an amazing fit, especially given the fact that third base has been a black hole for the Angels for parts of the last few years. Instead, they went out and acquired Vernon Wells. While Wells is a solid player, his best years are probably behind him. I talked about that trade when it happened, and I still think it’s an awful trade for the Angels.

Oakland – I’m excited to see what the team can do this year, but I’m not 100% sold that the offense has been given enough of an upgrade to leap past the Rangers. The pitching is very good, and I really like what they did with the bullpen. But I am concerned about whether the additions of DeJesus, Matsui, and Willingham are big enough upgrades over the players for those positions last year. They seem like they are still a bit short on the power side, but with their pitching they may not need as much power as some teams. Something I do foresee happening if they fall out of the race early is for the team to start shopping a bunch of their relievers. They couldn’t get a big bat to sign in Beltre or Lance Berkman, so instead went and spent that money on more bullpen help.

Seattle – This is a team that is continuing to rebuild, and there isn’t a lot to look forward to with this year’s team any more than there was with last year’s. They will hope for improvements from Justin Smoak and a bounceback season from Chone Figgins, but there’s really not a lot of other places where they have improved. There is some hope coming, as prospects Michael Pineda and Dustin Ackley could both be in the Majors before the All Star break.

Texas – The Rangers are looking to repeat as American League champions, and losing Cliff Lee is probably the largest hole in their roster. They were able to replace Vladimir Guerrero‘s bat with Adrian Beltre, although at the expense of face of the franchise Michael Young. Their pitching still contains question marks in the rotation, but they are hoping that Brandon Webb will provide some much needed innings, and there still remains the possibility of Neftali Feliz successfully converting back to a starter.

Overall Thoughts

The AL West always gets a bit of a knock on it for being a bit of a weaker division, and this year’s group probably isn’t going to dissuade anyone from that opinion. The Rangers, Athletics and Angels all could win 90+ games and the division, but I’m not particularly confident which one it will be, or if even one will do it. Here’s my predicted order of finish:

1. Texas
2. Oakland
3. Los Angeles
4. Seattle

My Thoughts

Chicago – This is a team that should compete, and despite losing all of the bullpen pitchers they did, should still be able to hold a lot of leads. They will have Chris Sale in the bullpen for the whole season, and Matt Thornton seems the most likely to be closing games for the team. The addition of Adam Dunn and his 35-40 home runs should help the offense quite a bit, and take some pressure off of both Paul Konerko and Alex Rios.

Cleveland – There’s not a lot to get super excited about here. The team remains in a rebuilding phase, as they hope that youngsters like Matt LaPorta and Justin Masterson can take a step forward. Carlos Santana could emerge as one of the top catchers in baseball, but it remains to be seen how he will recover from his season-ending knee injury last year. I don’t see them competing this year, but they could rebound somewhat with returns from Grady Sizemore and Santana.

Detroit – The Tigers made the first major splash of free agency, adding Victor Martinez to a lineup which could really use another big bat behind Miguel Cabrera. It remains to be seen whether or not Cabrera’s DUI arrest last month will have any affect on the season itself, but the Tigers seem to be the most likely competition for the division title. Their rotation could be even better this year as Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello will build on solid second halves.

Kansas City – It’s going to be pretty ugly this year in KC, and this could be the team most likely to finish with the worst record in baseball. There’s a lot of hope coming, with Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer having the potential to make an appearance in the Majors before the season is over. 2012 is the big push for the Royals, and it could be very good when these prospects start arriving. Until then, the best that Royals fans can hope for is to see improvement from players like Alcides Escobar and Billy Butler.

Minnesota – The reigning division champs, Minnesota retooled the middle of their infield by adding import Tsuyoshi Nishioka to replace traded SS J.J. Hardy on the diamond. They were also able to resign Jim Thome and Carl Pavano to help fill similar roles to last year. Their playoff hopes could very well rest on Justin Morneau and his ability to return from last year’s season-ending concussion.

Overall Thoughts

The AL Central has a couple of teams who seem likely to compete, and a couple who are already practically eliminated. I think that the Twins, Tigers, and White Sox are likely to make solid pushes for the division title, but the division really seems up for grabs. Last season was the first in a while where the AL Central was clinched early, and I think that is unlikely to happen in 2011. Here’s my predicted order of finish:

1. Minnesota
2. Chicago
3. Detroit
4. Cleveland
5. Kansas City

My Thoughts

Baltimore – This is a team that has brought in a lot of veterans to help with the development of some of their younger players. They have remade their offense, adding Guerrero, Lee, and Reynolds to provide more power. With a rebound season from Brian Roberts, there’s a lot to like about this team. That said, they are extremely reliant on their young pitching, and they will make the difference between competing for the division title and finishing last again. The one player who seems to be ticketed for a return to AAA is Josh Bell, as Mark Reynolds will be playing 3B for the team on most days. Bell’s performance in the Majors last season left a lot to be desired, and he probably could use some more time in the minors before being given the job again.

Boston – It’s hard to argue that the Red Sox have had anything but a very successful offseason. This is a team that won 89 games despite substantial DL stints by Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Jacoby Ellsbury, and many others as well. All they did was go out, and replace Adrian Beltre with Adrian Gonzalez, and then add Carl Crawford to play left field instead of Mike Cameron. The offense Crawford provides will help to make up for the loss of Victor Martinez to the Tigers, but overall this is a team that is still improved from last year’s version.

New York – The Yankees come into the season with a lot of question marks, specifically in the starting rotation. They were unable to sign Cliff Lee as a free agent during the offseason, and were not able to acquire a starting pitcher either. They have C.C. Sabathia and Phil Hughes, but beyond that are question marks. Can A.J. Burnett return to form? Can they find 40-6o starts out of the mix of Ivan Nova, Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, and others? Will the offense carry them enough that it won’t matter that much?

Tampa Bay – Losing the amount of players that they did would normally make me think that they would have no chance of competing in the AL East this year. But they have a lot of pieces available to them to fill in the gaps. They traded Matt Garza at least in part because they knew that they had Jeremy Hellickson available who was clearly ready to start for the team. The loss of Carl Crawford is probably the toughest, but they have top prospect Desmond Jennings ready to step in, and provide at least some of the production that Crawford did. They lost Soriano, Balfour, and many other relievers this offseason, and made trades to address these deficiencies at least in part. They need a lot of things to break their way to continue their excellence, but the team is probably better set up than most to address those needs.

Toronto – Clearly, the biggest move they made this offseason was to shed the contract of Vernon Wells for essentially nothing. The additional payroll flexibility was used to lock up Jose Bautista to a 5 year extension, and while it remains to be seen whether or not it was a good contract, it continues to be a great offseason for the Blue Jays. The team has an excess of starting pitching talent, and moved Shaun Marcum to acquire top prospect Brett Lawrie. Their own top prospect, Kyle Drabek, is likely to start the season in the rotation, and I think that overall this is a team that will compete for the division title.

Overall Thoughts

The AL East is easily the most difficult division to win. Realistically, there are 4 teams that would stand at least a reasonable chance of winning any of the other 5 divisions in any given year. But unfortunately, there are at best 2 playoff spots available to the teams of the AL East, and I think that this year will be a great race. The scary part is this: I think there’s at least a reasonable chance of having all 5 teams in the league finish at least .500 or better. Here’s my predicted order of finish:

1. Boston
2. Tampa Bay
3. Toronto
4. New York
5. Baltimore

Finishing up with a trip around the NL West, here’s the last of the face of the franchise posts…

Arizona – Right now, I’d have to imagine that Justin Upton is very high on the list. The team has had a lot of turnover in the past year or so, and Upton has become one of the longer tenured members of the team.

Colorado – I would say that the previous face, Todd Helton, has been eclipsed at this point, with Troy Tulowitzki taking the helm instead. And with Tulo under contract through 2020 at this point, he’s not going anywhere for a while.

Los Angeles – I would imagine that the most identifyable player at this point would either be Matt Kemp, or possibly Andre Ethier. I think it’s only another year or two until Clayton Kershaw could overpower the other players on the team for this, as he is still very young.

San Diego – I’m not sure that they have one currently, as they traded Adrian Gonzalez away to Boston during the offseason. It will be interesting to see who establishes themselves as Spring Training and the season progresses. The first candidate that popped into my head was Mat Latos, and I think he may be able to do that as well.

San Francisco – Right now, it has to be the 2-time Cy Young award winning Tim Lincecum. Buster Posey will likely eclipse Lincecum at some point in the not so-distant future, but for a team built around its pitching, the best pitcher on the team fits that role very nicely.

Upcoming in the next couple of weeks will be my look at how I think each of the divisions will shake out, along with my predictions for the season.
